Raffia - Bast

Hi there!

During our weekly grocery-shopping last Thursday we came across packages of gift ribbons made of raffia. They did not catch my eye because of the huge amount of gifts we have to wrap this year, nor because of the bright colours, no, I immediately considered using them to crochet.
  

I did not mention this to my husband. And just in case he would wonder why I actually needed 4 (four) packages of gift ribbons, I added some wrapping-paper to our trolley.

As we left for our mini-break to France on Friday and as we had plenty of engagements since our return, I had no opportunity to try the raffia till this morning.

As soon as the breakfast-table was cleared this morning though, I brought everything I though I could need onto the back porch

Soon I found out I needed a very stable N° 8 hook to master the rather unyielding material (maybe raffia in it's natural state is not that hard to crochet with). But even then it was still strenuous for my right thumb and wrist, so also had to adapt my technique.
  

As I started to crochet with the raffia because of the raffia, I did not know what I was crocheting (just like I wrote on facebook). It was challenging and fun and that was really it, till the first skein was done.

Liebe Freunde,

während unsere Wocheneinkäufe letzten Donnerstag blieb ich an einem Korb voller Geschenkbänder aus Bast hängen. Ausnahmsweise waren es nicht die bunten Farben, die meine Aufmerksamkeit geweckt hatten. Und es ist auch nicht so, als ob wir dieses Jahr noch außerordentlich viele Geschenke zu verpacken hätten. Nein, ich fragte mich lediglich, ob ich mit diesen Geschenkbändern auch etwas häkeln könnte.

Damit mein Mann sich nicht zu sehr wunderte, weshalb ich ausgerechnet 4 (vier) Packungen von diesen Geschenkbändern brauchte, habe ich noch eine Rolle Geschenkpapier in den Einkaufswagen gelegt.
  

Am Freitag sind wir aber zu unserem Kurzausflug nach Frankreich aufgebrochen und nach unserer Rückkehr jagte eine Verabredung die nächste, und deshalb hatte ich noch keine Gelegenheit, den Bast zu probieren.

Heute Morgen war es dann soweit. Sobald der Frühstückstisch geräumt war, holte ich meine Sachen aus dem Atelier herunter auf die Terrasse.

Bald hatte ich herausgefunden, dass ich eine sehr stabile 8er Häkelnadel brauchte um das widerspenstige Material zu bearbeiten (vielleicht ginge es leichter mit naturbelassenem Bast – muss ich bei Gelegenheit mal ausprobieren). Und ich musste meine Häkeltechnik anpassen, denn bald verkrampfte sich zunächst mein rechter Daumen, dann aber fast die ganze rechte Hand inklusive Handgelenk.
  

Da ich heute nur wegen des Basts zu Häkeln angefangen hatte, wusste ich gar nicht was ich eigentlich häkeln wollte (wie auf facebook erwähnt). Es war eine Herausforderung und es machte Spaß, aber erst nachdem das erste Knäuel Geschenkband verbraucht war, hatte ich so etwas wie eine Idee.

Nun ja, das ist letztendlich dabei herausgekommen (bislang):
